Open House New York 2010

Open House New York 2010 opened Wednesday, September 29th for reservations promptly at 9a.  And despite my very best efforts, so far have only managed to snag one spot at the Slot House, and a spot on the waiting list for Kushner House.  But let’s backtrack.

OHNY is the one weekend a year in which private homes, institutions, and historic buildings, open their doors – some only opening them a crack with a strident reservations system, while others are flinging their double doors wide open in favor of public access – so to speak.  Unwilling to miss the boat like I did last year, where I morosely emailed too late and ultimately never left the house to explore some of these newly opened doors, this year I planned ahead.  One list for spots which required reservations, and one list for the leisurely world of drop-ins.

Open House New York is for the design minded voyeur.  It’s a chance to get to know what’s inside the buildings you walk in front of, passing around, usually glimpsing no more than a facade, a hint of the tops of bookshelves, lighting fixtures and framed artwork.

And so Wednesday morning I was ready.  And by 9:06 am all my reservation emails had been sent and checked off the list.

Wanting to tour Sixpoint Ales and the amazing Murray’s Cheese underground lair – ie. their wonderfully fragrant cheese caverns – I believe these two are already fully booked and am wondering about list for the Wallabout tour in Fort Greene.  Waiting is a game.

And in case neither Kushner, nor the others on my reserved list materialize, here are no-reservation needed picks:
