September Equinox

Fall has arrived, and a few things in the past week or so has made it abundantly clear that saying goodbye to summer isn’t the worst thing in the world.

1.  Autumnal Equinox – And with it, celebratory classes, wine and food at all Equinox gym locations.  I’m thrown by a gym offering wine and food, but then again, Equinox has always felt more like a spa than a gym – eucalyptus scented cooling towel anyone?

[From Wiki: An equinox occurs twice a year, when the tilt of the Earth‘s axis is inclined neither away from nor towards the Sun, the center of the Sun being in the same plane as the Earth’s equator. The term equinox can also be used in a broader sense, meaning the date when such a passage happens. The name “equinox” is derived from the Latin aequus (equal) and nox (night), because around the equinox, the night and day are approximately equally long. It may be better understood to mean that latitudes +L and –L north and south of the Equator experience nights of equal length.]

2.  Apple Picking / September road trips – The Rodeo

We did all of the above (plus some doughnuts from The Doughnut Plant) last weekend.  Yeah it was pretty awesome.   Fall days are made for getting into the car, putting on some Disney/90’s hits and seeing where the road takes you.

3.  Apple Cider and more importantly Apple Cider Donuts!

I took a trip to the farmer’s market during lunch yesterday and picked myself up a bag of sweetly chubby apple cider donuts, cake-like and cinnamon-y, they’re a mouthful of fall heaven.  And now that apple cider is making the rounds again, it’s time for warmed apple cider stewed with sticks of cinnamon, star aniseed and cloves for a warm, spicy apple cider that tastes all the better with an addition of bourbon.

Additionally – fall is a perfect time to add apples to your salad or sandwich – it goes perfectly with turkey, cheddar cheese, lettuce from the farmer’s market, and walnuts.

4. Oktoberfest aka Rocktoberfest

This Friday kicks off New York Craft Beer week around the city, and while most bars just “support” or are “friends of” NY Craft Beer Week (although, really, aren’t we all friends of NY Craft Beer Week?), there are actual events around the city.  Please drink responsibly.

5.  A chill in the air calls for the application of the layering technique New Yorkers love and know so well.  Air conditioned in the summer, bring a cardigan.  Hot subway cars in the winter, take off a layer or two.  Fall fashion is in full swing, with capes, flannel + plaid, and military inspired mid-length jackets gracing the streets.  Goodbye smelly flip flops.  Hello sweet leather boots.

6.  Fall shows are back – most importantly – Glee!
