Artichokes and Period Pieces

Tonight I cautiously made artichokes for the first time – nothing fancy, just steamed until tender – and I think they taste like feet.  Perhaps next time, go with something a little fancier or I’ll just be satisfied with the marinated kind.

Then again, after seeing Bitty’s recipe for a shaved artichoke salad, and a brand-spanking new birthday present of a mandolin, I may just give this a try.  Less likely to taste like feet.

On another note: I recommend watching The Pillars of the Earth – a Showtime miniseries based on Ken Follett’s novel of the same name and set in England during the Middle Ages/Crusades (a category I would not choose on Jeopardy/Trivial Pursuit).  Eight hours later, I now have a deep and resounding crush on Eddie Redmayne (as if I didn’t already after seeing him alongside Alfred Molina in Red) and cannot stop watching English period pieces including Lost in Austen (prompting a falsetto ‘Mr. Bingley!’ exclamation in my head) and currently The Duchess.  All I want to do now is bake a pie and watch a good costume drama.  Hello fall/winter hibernation activity numero uno.

And: Peels – the new eatery opened just a few weeks ago on the corner of Bowery and Second Street, by the team that brought you Freemans.  Visiting on a Friday, and the Friday of Labor Day weekend mind you, bore no letup for the much talked and blogged about cafe.   The cafe was chocker mid-afternoon, with a few parties waiting for a table.  With a good selection of coffee and pastries, and a decent sandwich list – I had the Gobblecado which was good but not quite amazing – I’d certainly revisit for any meal be it breakfast (build your own biscuit sandwiches), lunch or dinner (fried chicken!) – Peels is a great addition to the neighborhood, and the ambiance is spot on – more European cafe than CBGB with high wooden tables and stools – the Bowery has certainly undergone a revamp in years past.

  1. Did you make a dijon dipping sauce for the artichokes? That’s the best way to eat them in my opinion.
