Pie-offs are popular in the summer

Last night M. and I had a drink at The Gate in Park Slope and to our surprise, we were greeted by PIES (and children) upon entry  – both confusing at a bar that is by turns both divey and the epitome of a good Brooklyn bar.  Tut tut – we could only look and not touch.  It was the first annual Bake Off at The Gate, determined to prove that yes, beer is a great accompaniment to dessert, especially pie.  It was humid outside, but cool inside, and the sight of pies nearly sent M. and I into the outer limits of our love for pies.   There were strawberry pies, peanut butter pies, pecan pies, even a pie topped with bacon.  Judging the event were the ladies from newly opened Four and Twenty Blackbirds, and M. and I stood behind them, trying to catch a word or two of judgment about the delicious looking slices in their hands, marveling at their sheer stamina in being able to sample all the pies, and nearly bowled over by the spread. Who knows who won, but having talked to one of the contestants, she seemed happy just to be talking smack about her friends’ pies and looking at the glorious array of pies.  Another reason to love The Gate.
