Roommate Dinner aka When You Give A Surgical Resident a Pizza Cutter…

A month after New Rachel moves in – we finally get it together to have a roommate dinner with Therese’s CSA veggies (although in the end we only end up using the willowy finger-like garlic scapes).

So let’s find out what happens when you give a surgical resident a pizza cutter….

Brilliant of all brilliant plans!  Homemade pizza – the dough’s not homemade mind you but fairly freshly made by Whole Foods yesterday morning which suited us working girls just fine) – and our mantra being simple but delicious – just a little dough, a little mozzarella and a whole lot of veggies!

First up – our broccoli rabe, mozzarella and red pepper flake pizza – we are a household of  red pepper flake lovers, and this is modeled after an absolute slap-bang pizza Jen and I had at Motorino Williamsburg – still droolworthy upon remembering which reminds me – must go back to Motorino…  If anyone goes looking for this pizza, it originally comes with some meat but as I was with vegetarian Jen, we opted out.  Good decision.

Therese forks the pizza dough – we put it in the 450 degree oven for 5-6 minutes rolled out on a foil-covered baking sheet, with a helping of olive oil brushed on top.  And after the heating and before the final topping, it need a good forking to get the air bubbles out.  Besides, it’s fun to fork.

Second up!  Pizza with mozzarella, mushrooms, red pepper, garlic and garlic scapes.  The mushrooms shrank a lot, and the rest of the veggies we sauteed over low heat for around 15 minutes in the same oil and hot pepper flakes we cooked the broccoli rabe in.

The pizza comes out looking marvelous and it is finally time to put our pizza cutter to use.

Putting the surgeon to work – after all, good practice since she starts her first on call on Thursday… Watch out America – beware of the hospitals starting July for that’s when all the Newbies start!  Just kidding – Rachel put that pizza to shame!

Dessert from Ladybird – fruit means healthy, right?

And a very delicious and successful dinner followed by some time spent lounging in the air-conditioned half of the apartment watching the newest Sherlock Holmes with Jude and Robert.  A slightly lackluster movie, but dinner was surely not.
